Alamogordo High School is located in an area that continues to rank among the most economically challenged regions in the United States. As of the most recent data, approximately 19.1% of the total population in Alamogordo lives below the poverty line. In the target area, 88.2% of individuals over the age of 25 hold at least a high school diploma or equivalent. However, among economically disadvantaged students who do graduate, only about 53.4% pursue post-secondary education.
Alamogordo High School (AHS) is situated in Alamogordo, New Mexico (estimated population: 31,300) and serves the surrounding rural communities of Otero County. Alamogordo, located in the Tularosa Basin of the Chihuahuan Desert, is bordered to the east by the Sacramento Mountains and to the west by White Sands National Park. It is also home to Holloman Air Force Base. Otero County, with an updated population of approximately 66,000, covers a total area of 6,613 square miles and is located in southern New Mexico, adjacent to the Texas border. The county's economy remains reliant on agriculture, service industries, and federal and state agencies.
According to the New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED), the Alamogordo Public Schools (APS) is the fourteenth largest school district in New Mexico.
